Community Projects
It is our aim to engage the local community in the life of the company and to have a positive impact. In response to the high level of malnutrition in the community, we have introduced a twice weekly donation of tilapia to the local hospitals, clinics and an orphanage. We also donate our product to the local NGO for people living with AIDS.
In an area characterised by high unemployment, we are delighted to employ 400 local people. We are very committed to the welfare of our staff – who are offered two meals a day when working at our factory and given a monthly ration of fish. Another project to benefit our employees is our funding and support of ‘employee gardens’ where staff can grow produce for home consumption. Lake Harvest also sponsors a local football team.
Over the past ten years, Lake Harvest has been assisting the impoverished local government to run their facilities in Kariba, which has a population of 25,000. This involvement has included a wide range of projects including funding road maintenance, improving power lines, repairing municipality water pumps, improving water purification, repairing local authority cars, donating fuel and servicing municipality boats.
We also organise an annual “Clean up Kariba day” where employees volunteer to clean up the community.
