Lake Kariba, Zimbabwe

Natural habitat

Lake Harvest chose Lake Kariba for its exceptional water quality and natural habitat for tilapia.  The lake is fed from the spectacular Victoria Falls and has neither industries nor significant populations that could possibly cause contamination.

The lake, one of the world’s largest man-made reservoirs, is over 220 kilometers long and up to 40 kilometers in width. It covers an area of 5,580 square kilometers and its storage capacity is an immense 185 cubic kilometers. The average depth of the lake is 29 metres.

Before Lake Kariba was filled, the existing vegetation was burned, creating a thick layer of fertile soil on land that would become the lake bed. As a result the ecology of Lake Kariba is vibrant.

Kariba is unique, a place of outstanding beauty, with its lake setting and the majestic backdrop of mountains.  Guarded by enormous reserves of game, this place pulsates with wildlife and fauna.  With fish eagles and cormorants patrolling the shorelines and elephants swimming in the lake, Lake Harvest can think of no better place to be based. Lake Harvest aims to achieve 20,000 tonnes of tilapia production per annum by the end 2014 at Lake Kariba.
